Carbonne is one of the last bastides built in the 14th century in the South West. The origin of the town’s name “Carbonne” is linked to the exploitation of wood by charcoal makers.
Situated at the confluence of the Arize and Garonne rivers, Carbonne was built on a raised terrace to protect itself from flooding. This ancient fortified bastide has pretty pink brick facades on its houses of character and emblematic monuments in its old centre. Close to Toulouse, one hour from the Pyrenees, and at equal distance from the Mediterranean and Atlantic shores, Carbonne enjoys a pleasant climate resulting from various influences.
The Carbonne campsite Le Moulin is perfectly set for touring around the Haute-Garonne and its capital, Toulouse.
Among the emblematic monuments of the city, you will find: The governor’s house under Louis XIV, one of the oldest buildings in Carbonne, it has a tower called “governor’s tower”. It is in fact a dovecote with a dome and skylight from the 16th century.
The tabernacle of the high altar of the church of Saint-Laurent in Saint-Béat marble and gilded wood.
The Saint-Jacques chapel, built in the 17th century, has a beautiful 15th century polychrome wooden piéta.
Camping Carbonne Le Moulin is situated close to the Garonne and following the river you will get to Toulouse.
The André Abbal museum is worth a visit for the quality of its works (sculptures), its location in the town (near the church, which you should also visit) and its poetic garden, which is wonderfully maintained like the rest of the museum.
