Saint-Gaudens is the gateway to Comminges, an ancient county whose borders extended from Muret to the Ariège and the Val d’Aran.

Populated since Antiquity (Iron Age, Roman period), and initially called Mas-Saint-Pierre, the town takes its current name from the martyrdom of Gaudens, a young shepherd who fell victim to the Visigoths at the end of the 5th century for refusing to renounce his faith: a fine legend!
Building on its rich past and heritage, Saint-Gaudens has become a dynamic and pleasant cultural centre.

A market town, it has a beautiful 10th and 12th century collegiate church dedicated to Saint-Pierre and Saint-Gaudens, situated on the road to Compostela. To the south of the town, the remains of a large Gallo-Roman villa dating from the 4th century can be seen in Valentine. The organ of the Collegiate Church of Saint-Gaudens: the current organ case dates from before 1662. It is a large massive oak and lime tree case, with Louis XIV style characteristics. It was classified as a historical monument in 1972 and 1980. The Eugène Azémar square, named in honour of the creator of the Grand Prix automobile du Comminges (1922-1952) is the town’s public garden.
